What if you were invisible? Look down at your right hand. Imagine it fading from sight… the only evidence that it is still there is a slight wiggle from your mouse. The rest of your body blends in to your surroundings. You are now completely invisible to the human eye. How do you feel?
Empowered? Hidden? Relieved? Afraid? Alone?
Continue in your hiddenness as a friend comes into the room. Your body completely present, yet completely invisible. How do you communicate with them?
Do you speak? If so, softly or loudly? Behind them or in front?
Do you move objects? Write them a letter?
Maybe you even put a sheet over yourself and so as to reassure them that you really are human like them?
Okay, you can reappear now.
My point in turning you invisible is this: God faces a similiar circumstance with us.
The Bible says in Exodus 33:20 that it is deadly for a human being, with our messed up sin-infected eyes, to see God’s face. Being the lover of action movies and video games that I am, I always imagine that my head would probably explode just looking into the eyes of a Being who is so holy, powerful, loving, patience, kind, great, etc, etc. The Bible also says in 1 John 4:9-10 that this powerful and holy God is also madly in love with us and is actively pursing a plan of action that will solve our sin infection. So how does God express His love for us if He must remain invisible? Better yet, how does He accomplish His purposes if He is totally transparent?
I believe that He does so the same way you or I would if we were invisible. He speaks; softly most of the time and loudly on rare occasion. Sometimes we are aware of his voice as we reflect on the past and what is behind us. Other times we hear Him whispering to us about what is to come, but it is always with a purpose for the present and with the warm breath of One who is here with us now not waiting for us at some point in the distant future. God has also written us a letter, the Bible, to express his love and plan. He has even put on a sheet of human flesh to reassure us that He is, indeed, one of us, and executed the most important of His plan (John 3:16).
What if… instead of crying out to God to reveal Himself… we would actually listen and look for what He is wanting to communicate with us.
